Two years ago, the St. John Paul II girls’ lacrosse team captured the first playoff win in program history with a 24-13 victory over Pembroke, only to lose in the next round to sectional finalist Norwell.

This season, the Lions seek not only to qualify for the playoffs and win in the first round, they’d like to extend their run even further into the tournament.

“It’s always our goal to qualify for the playoffs, and we’re hoping for a first-round victory once again and then try to move on from there,” said second-year coach Russell Tierney.

Tierney, a longtime coach in the Sandwich Youth program, was the former boys’ coach at St. John Paul before being asked by former girls’ coach Mike Sullivan to join his staff as a defensive specialist and assistant five years ago.

“These girls work really great as a group – it’s all about them,” said Tierney, who is assisted in the program by Pat Van Cott, the girls’ basketball coach in the winter.
